1. Introduction

In the Sikar district of the Indian state of Rajasthan, there stands the ancient Harshnath Temple, a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated just 14 km from the district headquarters in Sikar, it holds a significant place in the region’s religious and cultural heritage.

In the 10th century, the Shiva temple at an undisclosed location, as per a 973 CE inscription, was constructed by the Shiv ascetic Bhavarakta during the reign of Chahamana king Vigraharaja I. The temple is now surrounded by various shrines that are in a state of ruins.

In 1718, Rao Shivsingh undertook the construction of a new temple adjacent to the old one, utilizing the remnants of the original structure.

A similar temple of the exact type is also found in Harsh Village, Bilara, known as the Harsh Deval Temple. This temple in Dist Jodhpur, Rajasthan, was also built in the 10th century.
